The Government of India has announced the naming of 13 airports in the country, which names have also been proposed by some states. At the same time, the topic of changing the name of Chandigarh airport was pending for a long time. In 2007, on the birth centenary celebrations of Bhagat Singh, the Punjab government had earlier asked to name the airport after Bhagat Singh, but the Haryana government wanted to name it after Mangal Sen. An agreement could not be reached between Punjab and Haryana on this name.

After that Haryana and Punjab Legislative Assembly passed resolutions many times, still this naming could not be done. Apart from the Government of India, Haryana and Punjab have a stake in Chandigarh Airport. At the same time, now the Haryana and Punjab governments have agreed on the name of Chandigarh International Airport. Today, after the agreement on the name of the airport, the proposal will be sent to the central government.
