The Sri Lankan government itself announced on 18 May 2009 that Prabhakaran was killed when Sri Lankan soldiers in the northern part of the country tried to capture him. According to reports, on 21 May 2009, Velupillai Prabhakaran, the founder of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE or LTTE), was killed by the Sri Lankan army. With this, the Jaffna region of Sri Lanka was freed from the terror of LTTE. After Prabhakaran's death, the LTTE announced surrender and silenced its guns.
