Ever since the birth of the state of Nagaland, no woman representative has been elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly till date. In 1963, the state of Nagaland was formed. But today, after sixty years, a history was created in Nagaland. For the first time in Nagaland, a woman won the assembly elections. This is great news for half the population of Nagaland. Hekani Jakhalu has won the Nagaland Assembly elections for the first time on an NDPP ticket. Hekani Jakhalu has registered this victory in Dimapur's third assembly. He defeated Ajeto Zhimomi of LJP (Ram Vilas) by 1536 votes. A total of four women candidates got tickets in the Nagaland Assembly Elections 2023. Hekani Jakhalu was one of them. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had also reached Hekani's election campaign along with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

Four women candidates contested in the Nagaland Assembly Elections 2023. Besides Hekani Jakhalu, the NDPP fielded a woman candidate, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, from Angami West. The Congress had fielded Rosie Thomson from the Taining constituency, while Kahuli Sema was contesting from the Atoizu constituency on a BJP ticket.

Hekani belongs to Jakhalu (48 years). Educated in America. He is a lawyer and social entrepreneur. He earned his Master of Law in 2013 from the University of San Francisco School of Law. Hekani also runs an NGO named Youthnet. Hekali is famous for providing livelihood to the youth in Nagaland. She fights for the rights of women. Hekani Jakhalu was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2018. She is a resident of Toluvi village.

Hekani Jakhalu has stated in his election affidavit that he has assets worth Rs 5.58 crore. 41.95 lakh is a debt of more than Rs. Hekani and her husband own half a dozen cars. Wears jewelry worth 30 thousand and a watch worth two lakh rupees. The husband has gold rings worth 60 thousand and a gold chain worth two lakhs. His total movable assets are more than 3.51 crores.

Elated with his victory, Hekani Jakhalu said that to date there has been no woman representative in the highest decision-making body of Nagaland. It is the duty of the local MLA to provide quality education, proper health facilities and basic amenities in his constituency. She is very happy that she has become a woman to create history.
