Australia created the first chance of the match in the seventh minute but their players could not get past goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak's alertness after outrunning the Indian defence. Five minutes later, the Indian captain took the lead from a penalty corner by focusing on 'placement' instead of using power and rounded Australia goalkeeper Johan Durst to the right.

It was Mandeep Singh who assisted Akashdeep Singh to score the winner for India, while the other goals came from Harmanpreet Singh (12), Abhishek (47) and Shamsher Singh (57). Jack Welch (25), Aran Zalewski (32) and Nathan Ephraims (59) contributed goals for Australia.

Australia equalized through Eframs' goal in the last minute of the match but 54 seconds before the final hooter, India was awarded a penalty corner which Akashdeep converted from Mandeep Singh's shot to give the team a memorable win. After the match, India head coach Graham Reid said, "It was a better defensive effort today. We came back well on a number of occasions." However, he still cautioned the players against giving too many chances to their opponents.

He added, "While our PC conversion rate was good, we probably gave them too many chances and put a little too much trust in our goalkeeper.
