The Supreme Court has issued an order to release all six convicts, including Nalini Sriharan, from jail in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The top court said that if there is no other case against these convicts, then they should be released. Earlier, while hearing the petition of the convicts, the Supreme Court had asked the Central Government and the Tamil Nadu Government to issue a notice regarding this matter and sought their response.

At the same time, on May 18, the Supreme Court ordered the release of AG Perarivalan, after which an order has been issued to release 6 murder convicts today. After this decision of the Supreme Court, crackers have been burst in Vellore, Tamil Nadu and sweets have also been distributed.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin welcomed the decision to release Rajiv Gandhi's killers, saying that "the Supreme Court's judgment has shown that governors should not put on hold the decisions of elected governments. The foundation stone of democratic principles has been strengthened."

Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi expressed his disappointment over the Supreme Court's decision while addressing a press conference. He said that this decision has shaken the conscience of the country. Along with this, when questioned by the media, it was said that Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have forgiven the culprits of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. Responding to this, Abhishek Singhvi said that "Sonia Gandhi is entitled to express her personal views, but with great respect, the party does not agree with Sonia Gandhi in this matter. We have made our point clear."

On the night of 21 May 1991, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, when a suicide bomber came near Rajiv Gandhi on the pretext of wearing a flower necklace.
