Dronacharya award-winning coach Mahavir Phogat on Thursday came out in support of the protesting wrestlers and suggested that no political person should be allowed to take up the post of president in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), but "a good Qualified wrestler or athlete should be given this post. Prior to Mahaveer's remarks, several wrestlers, including Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, protested at Jantar Mantar against the functioning of the WFI and its president.

Vinesh Phogat on Wednesday alleged that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and some other coaches sexually assaulted women wrestlers at the national camps in Lucknow. Mahavir, the father of former wrestlers Geeta and Babita Phogat, told reporters here, "I think no corrupt person should hold the post of WFI president, rather a well-qualified wrestler or athlete should come forward and lead, not A political person should come to the post."

She said, "I came to know through female wrestlers that he used to stalk them, threaten them to end their careers, which is shameful and shocking at the same time. All these girls have suffered a lot. I request the government to take strict action and support the wrestlers."

Earlier in the day, a meeting between sports ministry officials and a delegation of four wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh and Sakshi Malik, did not yield any results as the protesting wrestlers were not satisfied with the response. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur is expected to meet around eight protesting wrestlers at his residence at 22:00.
